Stars Fall

Centre for Creative Arts Mylly's annual exhibition Exception,
Varkaus City Library, Varkaus 2021

My spatial artwork Stars Fall was present in the Varkaus City Library in 4 Oct – 30 Nov as part of Mylly's annual exhibition Exception. The artwork was pieced together from African indigo textiles and treasures, together with experiments of my own. I have lived and worked in Nigeria and South Africa collecting both traditional and modern indigo textiles. I built my artwork from traditional Nigerian knot-dyes and my South African friends' products and patches.

The artwork contained treasures too, African stars that I acquired from Archbishop Desmond Tutu's home church's trinket shop in Cape Town (photo below). Tutu was active in the struggle against apartheid. During the corona inequality started to increase again because there were not enough vaccines and care for all.

In the picture below Stars Fall seen from the library hall. the library with its exhibition space was an inspirational place to hang multidimensional artworks.

I have got rich experiences and gifts from my African friends for over 30 years, which I am now sharing through my art to others as well. I thank my friends:

Nigerian dyer grandmas, dressmaker Lucy Ali, artist Segun Adeku, Prof Retha de la Harpe / CPUT, fine artist Jill Trappler, textile artist Antoinette du Plessis and the other textile artists of Sway
